For tenant movements, the parasite figure is often used to represent the Real Estate interests that extract and exploit, seize control of spaces, and force tenants from place to place: an ominous figure to be fought tooth and nail. The intervention Parasite Parking introduces a different parasite figure to Chicago’s built environment. The project from Berlin based artist Jakob Wirth and Alexander Sacharow imposes itself on the streets of Downtown Chicago as an uninvited guest and invites tenant partisans from Chicago to join in on the imposition. Together we want to discuss the meaning of public space and the right to the city. as well as the steps we take to claim it from Chicago to Berlin. Everyone and every group is invited to share their experiences and views on affordable living and anti-displacement struggles. Jakob Wirth and Alexander Sacharow will also share first hand experiences and insights from the Berlin tenant movement which has shaken up housing politics in recent years, most notably with an successful big real estate expropriation campaign.
